Deeper timber tones are finding their way back into contemporary styles, but this time the effect is less heavy and traditional. The rooms balance darker wood with plenty of breathing space: pale flooring, warm whites, simple furniture and carefully placed colour.
Warmia Walnut works particularly well here. A Wood Slat feature behind a bed or sofa gives a room definition without needing much else on the wall, while Warmia Walnut Shiplap gives the same rich tone a more classic boarded character.
Brown Cuneo Oak offers a slightly softer route into the same look, especially alongside clay, olive, cream or muted blue.
One of the easiest ways to make wood feel current is to stop treating it as a neutral that has to be paired with beige. AW26 trends are giving timber more interesting company, from dusty pink and blue to green, rust and wine-toned accents.
For a lighter combination, Bleached Cuneo Oak can sit comfortably beside chalky colour and soft textiles. At the other end of the scale, Grained Stone Green brings colour into the panelling itself. Try it in Shiplap for a relaxed wall treatment, or Wood Slat when you want the finish to feel sharper and more architectural.
The result doesn’t need to be bold from floor to ceiling. Even a small area of colour against a wood-inspired surface can make a familiar palette feel new.
Panelling isn’t only about the décor you choose; the design matters too. Wood Slat and Shiplap can create noticeably different effects even when the colour stays the same.
Wood Slat’s repeating multi-slat design creates crisp vertical alignment, shadow and depth, making it a natural choice for contemporary feature walls and spaces where you want to draw the eye upwards. Shiplap also runs vertically, but its wider boarded design has roots in traditional timber cladding, giving it a softer, more relaxed character that can suit anything from country-inspired rooms to clean a coastal escape.
Grained Alpine White is a good example. In Shiplap it can bring subtle character to a pale palette, while the Wood Slat version adds more shadow and definition without introducing a darker colour.

Panelling is becoming less confined to the predictable wall behind the television. Used selectively, it can help zone open-plan rooms, frame furniture or add interest to areas that are often overlooked.
Consider Wood Slat around a dressing table or dining nook, Shiplap behind bathroom furniture, or a panelled section in a hallway to break up a long stretch of wall. Beige Grey Lorenzo Oak and Grained Angora Grey are useful when you want the effect to feel integrated rather than high contrast.

This approach also leaves room for personal pieces - artwork, vintage furniture, books and objects collected over time - rather than allowing the wall treatment to dictate the whole scheme.
The strongest interiors this season won’t necessarily be the ones that follow the most trends. They’ll be the ones that borrow an idea, adapt it and make it work for the people who live there.
